About Me

Hi! I’m Kate, and my passion is capturing moments; everything from the contagious grins of a newly married couple, to a smile between mother and daughter, to the light falling just right across a gorgeous landscape.

If you count from the time I received my first camera at 8 years old (and I do), I’ve been a photographer for 22 years. I grew up in a family of artists and knew from a young age that I wanted my career to involve art in some form. In high school I took a black and white darkroom photography class, and that was where I truly fell in love with the medium. I went to undergrad to study photography and ended up in a speciality program for scientific photography, and I currently work (my day job) as a medical photographer, using specialized equipment to document and diagnose disease. But my true passion lies in photography itself: capturing moments as they unfold. Other than photography, I love to travel both near and abroad, and enjoy all the wonders that NYC, my home town, has to offer. In my down time, you’ll find me lounging in my backyard reading a book, hanging out at one of many family gatherings, cooking (and photographing) amazing meals, or working in my garden.

Q&A About Me

Do you do other types of photography besides events and weddings?

Of course! While all photographers have their specialties, I don’t think there’s any photographer out there that doesn’t have a range of passions when it comes to capturing moments. I travel a lot, and being able to document all of the gorgeous locations of the world is one of my great loves. I also love cooking and food photography (as evidenced by my food blog The Two Bananas), as well as photographing all sorts of events and day trips around the NYC area.

How did you become interested in event photography?

I first became passionate about wedding and event photography after photographing the weddings of a few close friends and family. The amount of love and excitement and familial closeness that are practically palpable in the air at family events is what truly drives my love for this type of photography. And my favorite part is being able to capture all those tiny moments, the ones that others may not remember, but that truly embody the essence of a day.

What makes you different from other wedding/event photographers?

I think that what truly drives my passion for event photography is the strong sense of family that I have in my life, and my joy in seeing those same bonds in others. I try to draw on this with any event that I shoot, and I think that’s what sets me apart from other photographers. I don’t just want to capture a day, I want to capture all of the emotions, all of the closeness and familial bonds that make it up. And I don’t want a client to just hire me to photograph their event; I want to work with them to truly understand the bond they have with their significant other, their family or their friends, and then let my photographs tell the story of that bond.

Will you capture the posed moments at my wedding/event as well?

Yes! Above all, the job of any wedding or event photographer is to make their client happy. And while I hope that anyone choosing me as their photographer will like the fact that I do things a little outside of the traditional way, I know how important some of those posed moments can be and I am always happy to photograph them. It’s your wedding or event, and I always want you to have access to all your memories from that day.

Why do you choose to shoot in a documentary style?

While photographing staged moments takes great skill and patience, I choose to shoot in a documentary style because I strive to capture raw moments and emotion. I am a story-teller by nature, and while I also love to write, my preferred method of story telling is through my photographs. My credence is that those tiny, raw, in-between moments are where the story lives, and documentary style photography allows me to capture those moments.
